It could be a scene from a science fiction film: thirty seven cars from all over the world speeding across the Aussie dessert between Darwin and Adelaide in a bid to be the first to cross the finish line, all powered by nothing other than sunlight. This year's race, which began on Sunday, 21 October ending on Sunday, 28 October, marks the 20th anniversary since the first event was staged.

The entrants consist of teams and individuals from corporations and research and educational institutions, and the event is a fun way for challengers to showcase their research and development of alternative transport technologies. At the same time the World Solar Challenge raises awareness of the benefits of solar energy which is important for combating the growing problem of climate change.

The issue of climate change is now more important than ever before after Australia recorded 2005 as its warmest year on record. Check out the World Solar Challenge website at http://www.wsc.org.au – it will inspire you to do your bit to change the world.
